He felt guilty about being happy without Princess Diana
For years after Diana’s death, Harry says happiness itself could feel like a betrayal of his mother. He describes worrying that healing from his grief might somehow weaken his connection to her.
“I’d spent so long emotionally numb, to a large extent, because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her,” Harry says. “I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her.”
Eventually, he says, his perspective changed dramatically.
